Stadium Review
- An Engineering Marvel
Arizona Cardinals Stadium
The Crown Jewel of my “Road Trip to Roswell” was certainly my visit to the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.  You would think from the name that the Arizona Cardinals share this facility with another college team.  However, this is not the case as the University of Phoenix is primarily an online institution with no sports teams.  They actually only hold the naming rights to the football stadium.  I'd seen a documentary on this football stadium months ago and could not wait to visit what is without a doubt, the premiere sports complex in the National Football League.  Nestled in the heart of Glendale, AZ one can see how the city has embraced the football stadium and made the surrounding area a year round functional space.  Adjacent to University of Phoenix Stadium are Jobing.com Arena, home to the NHL Phoenix Coyotes, and the Westgate City Center, which is an amazing blend of retail, cinemas, parks, and fountains.  Westgate has its own security force that is constantly on patrol and functions as a great place for shopping, dinner, or a night of sports patronage.  It was impressive to see how instead of building the football stadium in the midst of an already established city, that an entire retail network has sprung up around the football stadium to allow sports fans to enjoy the gametime atmosphere in what was once onion and alalfa fields.

University of Phoenix Stadium delivers as the state of the art faciliy in the NFL and is an engineering masterpiece.  It's exterior resembles that of a barrel cactus with metal paneling that reflects the hot desert sun, but it's shape takes styling cues from a coiled snake which is extremely unique.  University of Phoenix Stadium features a retractable roof and a retractable natural grass field, the only one of its kind in the NFL.  The roof is translucent, featuring a "Bird-Air" fabric which opens the stadium to outdoor breezes even when it's closed.  Equally impressive is the retractable field that rolls in and out of the football stadium on an 18.9 million pound tray powered by seventy-six one horsepower electric motors.  The field sits outside the football stadium throughout the week for watering and sunlight and features a Tifway-419 Bermuda hybrid grass that thrives in these conditions.  Arizona Cardinals fans finally have a modern facility to match their rapidly modernizing organization.
