Stadium Review - Reliant Stadium Tour
On a humid Houston, Texas morning in early July, I visited Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans.  As you approach Reliant Stadium, it is evident that the city of Houston has built an entire sports complex at Reliant Park with Reliant Stadium situated next to the abandoned AstroDome and Reliant Center along with Reliant Arena providing facilities for concerts and tradeshows that are too small for the full Stadium experience. The first thing to strike me about Houston is that they have the most evil, vile, and sinister mosquitoes I have ever encountered.  These things are jet black in color and they appear to hide in the grassy areas around the football stadium.  As soon as I approached the grass, swarms of these little bastards attacked me mercilessly.  But I digress … I arranged to take a 10 AM stadium tour of this NFL behemoth though the Reliant Stadium website.  Reliant Stadium boasts the first fully retractable roof in the National Football League and is a massive, visually appealing venue that is well suited to serve the infectiously electric football fan base that exists in the state of Texas.  The Houston Texans play on a natural grass surface that is assembled on gameday and removed again at the end of the night.  The grass is actually brought in on 1900, 8 foot by 8 foot palletized sections and assembled in the arena like a puzzle.  At the end of the season, the sod is destroyed and the Houston Texans ground crew begins growing new grass for the following year.  Reliant Stadium is surrounded by sculptures of footless charging steer that represent the “spirit of the fans”.  As spirits have no feet, the artist wanted to create a spirit that would remain in the building long after the fans had left.

The stadium tour offered by Reliant Stadium was fascinating.  Guests are taken through the facilities, visitor locker room, press box, club level, and down onto the field.  The Houston Texans locker room includes a full sized swimming pool and jacuzzi and Texans players are treated to catered breakfast and lunch 365 days of the year.  Walking through the players side of the stadium, one can’t help but notice the aroma of the day's pending mealtime treat.  The Club level has three themed areas including State of Texas Facts, the Rodeo, and the National Football League.  In each area, designers paid great attention to detail creating a horse shoe shaped Crown Royal bar, one that is shaped like a giant spur and a football shaped bar with a set of three-dimensional laces hanging above the bar tender.  Fantastic venue … definitely looking forward to a game here!
