Stadium Review
- Squish the Fish!
Buffalo Bills Stadium
There’s something magical about a Buffalo Bills home game in December. December in Buffalo is bitterly cold with swirling winds and plenty of the element we’re most famous for … snow. It’s the type of football you love to watch on TV, where blizzard-like conditions create a real world snow globe that our contemporary gladiators must endure. During the early Nineties, Jim Kelly and Co. crafted an aura of invincibility using our local weather to provide a home field advantage that’s tough to match. Visiting teams who dared venture into snowy western New York to play our Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium usually found themselves on the losing end when all was said and done. But that was another time and those were the good ‘ol days.

I’ve spent many a Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium shivering in the cold, watching and hoping for a Bills victory, but none were as enjoyable as spending Sunday afternoon with my dad, Big Hans, on this weekend in December 2007. Big Hans scored some 100-level Buffalo Bills tickets for the December 9 game against our loathsome division rival, the Miami Dolphins. “Squish the Fish” has become the mantra for Dolphins weekend, as over the course of the work week, our hatred for the Dolphin Franchise bubbles to a rolling boil - figuratively speaking of course, as I really have no deep seeded hatred of anyone from Miami.

So Hans & Hans took to Ralph Wilson Stadium for a feast before the game. For our tailgating menu, we planned a rotisserie roast turkey with all the trimmings, which we intended to cook right in the parking lot. An extension cord running to the cigarette lighter power inverter in my truck was all I would need to ensure a perfectly roasted Turkey. So we packed up my Ford Explorer with the rotisserie grill, the fire pit, and lots of wood. (Incidentally, all of these items can be purchased in any of my Quest for 31 ProShops under “Tailgating”… ignore the shameless self-promotion, by the way) We began our feast with Kegs and Eggs for breakfast. A fine micro-brewed IPA was the perfect accent to a delicious Egg McSteiniger sandwich, and as we waited for the rotisserie roast turkey, that was slow roasted for about three hours, we sat by the fire and drank brews. Lunch was served at noon and our Turkey was accented with yams, cranberry sauce and lots of gravy … another culinary masterpiece!

The Miami game was unBILLievable! The Buffalo Bills had donned their throwback, standing buffalo throwback uniforms, for “Squish the Fish” weekend and from the opening kickoff, the atmosphere was electric. Sitting in endzone seats in the lower bowl, we had a great view of the field as Trent Edwards methodically drove us down the field throwing four touchdown passes en route to a 38 – 17 Buffalo Bills victory. Marchawn Lynch and Fred Jackson each eclipsed the 100-yard mark setting up a showdown in Cleveland the following week with playoff implications. The game at Cleveland Browns Stadium is one I will be on attending on my Quest for 31 – Go Bills!
