Stadium Review - The Black Hole  I was in the Bay area for a couple of days, so a visit to the home of two storied NFL franchises would have to be made. McAfee Coliseum is the home of the Oakland Raiders and Oakland Atheletics and is situated right next to Oracle arena where the Golden State Warriors play. Built primarily as a baseball stadium, Al Davis transformed the stadium to accomodate NFL football when he brought the Oakland Raiders back to Oakland in 1995. Davis built an enormous Luxury suite in the A's outfield, which I'm sure nets him a pretty penny on gameday. Although in the fall, McAfee Coliseum is a black hole of death for opposing teams, on this day it looked surprisingly tame decked out in yellow and green for the Oakland A's baseball team. Baseball season does not deter the Quest however, it only means that recon is the order of the day. McAfee Coliseum does offer scheduled tours of the facility for a very reasonable $8 per person, but make sure to call ahead for a reservation (for more info on tours see below). I took the McAfee Coliseum stadium tour with Oakland A's tourguide Donnie Ledbetter. Donnie was kind enough and photographically proficient enough to snap most of the fine pictures you see below. The tour was fantastic, definitely the best one I've taken so far. It covers the Club level , suites, press box, locker room, weight room and the field. Donnie took our group to the practice batting cages where the DH and others warm up, the visiting team's locker room, and the Oakland A's dugout. This behind the scenes tour is something I would highly recommend. Their staff was very friendly, open and accommodating and I'm sure everyone on the tour had a very positive experience. Donning my Bo Jackson, Los Angeles Raiders, Korean knockoff throwback jersey, I could feel the Raider mystique and energy of the Raider Nation swirling through the stadium. I began formulating my over the top, shoulder-pads and facepaint gameday garb. It must be sacrilege to attend a Raider game at McAfee Coliseum without the proper attire. Unfortunately it will have to wait until I can make it back out to the Bay Area in the fall. Thanks Donnie, all of your efforts were much appreciated! |
