Stadium Review - The Blizzard Bowl of 2007Cleveland Browns Stadium
Last week’s drubbing of the 0-13 Miami Dolphins at Ralph Wilson Stadium had Bills fans BILLieving that they might be on the verge of a playoff appearance in 2007.  This week the Buffalo Bills were set to take on the Cleveland Browns at Cleveland Browns Stadium.  A win for the Bills kept their playoff hopes alive, a loss meant elimination from the playoff picture.  The weather reports all week called for snowy blizzard-like conditions with 43 mph winds throughout the entire game and the city of Cleveland delivered. It was an amazing atmosphere for football … like living in snow globe.

I’d arranged for tickets through my fraternity brother Arnold who is a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan and the crew from Buffalo who joined me for my trip to Stadium #3, Ford Field, were in town as well. It was decided that the Bills vs. Cleveland matchup would be a nice backdrop for our now annual “Mann-cation” Buffalo Bills Trip.  Arnold had seats in the Dawg Pound for two of us, so I would be located amongst some of the rowdiest Cleveland Browns fans in the stadium … and I was dressed in Bills Colors. I relished the opportunity presented to me.  It was to be a game in December in inclement weather amongst less than agreeable fans, and the Buffalo Bills playoff lives were at stake. How much more drama can one ask for? Where would you rather be than right here, right now?

When we arrived at Cleveland Browns Stadium, visibility was low. You couldn’t even tell there was a field out there. Snow and ice began accumulating on my hat and shoulders immediately, but once I settled in, dressed in four sweaters and three pairs of socks, I was toasty warm. I had heard all types of horror stories about the occupants of the Dawg Pound and fully expected to be pelted with snowballs, dog biscuits, or full cans of beer.  But the rain of sealed liquid beverages and canine treats never came.  The Buffalo Bills themselves weren’t as lucky, as several players were beaned with snowballs by Cleveland Browns fans.  I myself was tempted to toss an orb of malcontent at the cause of my dismay, but the Buffalo Bills were definitely out of my limited range.  Instead, I decided to suffer in silence as the Bills took to complete ineptness in all phases of their game.  The Browns fans were surprisingly agreeable however. They treated me with respect and happily took my picture without launching my camera or harassing me for asking.  There was the typical verbal jabs that go with being a fan of the visiting team, but the locals struck me as a classy group that's every bit the fan base the Bills enjoy in Buffalo.  The highlight of my fan-watch experience was a 70-year old woman sporting an orange Mohawk as she screamed obscenities at the refs below - classic!

Well, the Buffalo Bills were dominated in every facet of the game. Their defense was tossed around by the Cleveland Browns running attack as Jamal Lewis pounded the Bills for 163 yards on 33 carries. I thought WE were the cold weather team, I thought WE had a dominant running attack, apparently I was delusional. The Bills proved less than capable in inclement weather, which is of great concern to me as this team matures. But I didn’t let the scoreboard ruin my experience at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Even though the Bills took an 8 – 0 loss on the chin, they were never truly out of it. I watched my team go down in flames as Cleveland was pounded by one of the more brutal storms of the year.  Standing there watching in Section 319, I couldn’t help but smile with those poor bastards slipping and sliding in the muck out there. It was an incredible day for a football game!
