Stadium Review - The
Shrimp Boil![]() After spending Thanksgiving with the family in Tampa, FL, it was back on the road to Jacksonville to follow my Buffalo Bills into hostile territory. The Bills were just coming off an embarrassing loss to the “New England Patriot Machine” on Sunday Night Football and now had to contend with the surging Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jacksonville franchise will always be the NFL team that ushered out the Golden Era of Buffalo Bills Football. In their second year of existence, they came into Ralph Wilson Stadium on a blisteringly cold Saturday afternoon and defeated a highly favored veteran Bills team 30 to 27. It was the wild card round of the 1996 playoffs and I was on hand to watch it all implode. I will never forget the look on Jim Kelly’s face as he was carted off the field after a crushing blow by the Jaguars safety … he never returned. Kelly retired that summer and the Buffalo Bills dynasty was dead. I was hoping for some karmic payback this time around. Last year, while driving through Florida, I decided to stop in Jacksonville to take pictures outside Alltel Stadium (see last year’s review), currently Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. I ended up meeting Steve, a Flordian transplant now living in Indianapolis. Steve and his tailgating crew were planning a seafood boil for the Jags game the next day. Intrigued by the idea, I asked him to send some pictures since I would be in Tampa for a Bucs game at Raymond James Stadium. After seeing shades of the Jacksonville tailgating crew in action I had to be on hand to experience it for myself. So the following year, I scanned the Jags schedule for an opportunity to return. The Bills game in November was perfect, so Crystal, Annabella, and I drove over to rally my Buffalo Bills on to victory. It was to be Anna’s first NFL game. Steve was unable to get back to Jacksonville this year, so he set me up with his sister Alison, who was coordinating the 2007 Shrimp Boil. Alison got me setup with a spot in the Tailgaters Parking lot across from the stadium, and when we arrived on Sunday morning the boil was in full swing. A thirty-gallon, propane powered, aluminum kettle was already at a rolling boil. In went the potatoes, broccoli, sausage, and onions … and then Alison’s secret Cajun spice, a little something called, “Slap Ya Mama”. Once the potatoes were ready, everything was strained, poured onto a custom-made shrimp boil table, and the shrimp went into the boil. In a few minutes we were ready to eat … tearing off shrimp heads and biting into some of the spiciest broccoli I had ever eaten, I stuffed myself full of sausage, seafood, and veg. It was good eatin’! As for the main event, the Bills were mediocre at best. Trailing the whole game, an opportunity to tie the score in the fourth quarter ended in a JP Losman interception and that was all the Jags needed. Their offense exploded for 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter with touchdowns by Reggie Williams and Maurice Jones-Drew. A strike to the jugular that ended the hopes of a Buffalo Bills come from behind victory – those bastards did it to me again! But we were not done.
After the game, Alison and Co. fired up the boiler for another round
and the shrimp boil was back in full swing for the post game
celebration. With nothing to celebrate, I decided that my own
self-pity would best be served by gorging myself on “Slap Ya Mama”
seasoned shrimp and with a full belly, we were back on the road to
Detroit. Many thanks to those great Jags fans that included three
misguided souls in their gameday celebration. This experience was
easily the highlight of my culinary Quest. |
